Mariner’s compass

Collaborative installation/performance with Cassia Streb, for Sound Symposium XXI, St. John’s, Newfoundland, July 20, 2024.

Twenty-four sounding objects assembled from wireless speakers and wooden lanterns, distributed over the land between headstones at the Forest Road Anglican Cemetery, in an arrangement reminiscent of the banks of St. John’s Harbour.

These cycle through recorded sounds of wooden dock creaking, surf, and six bell buoys corresponding to the overhead locations of six bright stars in the summer night sky: Capella, Polaris, Deneb, Vega, Arcturus, and Antares.

Every half hour, an audio fog obscuring these sounds, moving from east to west.

Every half hour, a drone harmony performed live via viola and harmonium.
